E very year Karen and I look forward and anticipate our family vacation. This year was no exception ... we were geared up for it at least two months or more before the time finally rolled around!
There were 15 of us down this week staying in the beautiful South Myrtle Beach area close to the Point in Garden City. That area is so family oriented, even in the prime season.
We had a great time on the beach, in the pool, at the pier, back at the house chilling out, eating way too much ice cream, playing games ... whatever was happening was good. The runners in our group managed to put their mileage in before the others were up and about in the mornings.
Why do vacations seem to pass so much faster than any other time? It seemed as if we had just gotten there and it was time to head back home. Maybe next year we should make it two weeks ... now that's a thought!
Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not.

I t amazes me how fast our babies continue to grow. It seems like only yesterday we were awaiting Bradyn's arrival and now he's graduated from pre-school (Phi Beta Kappa I might add) and is ready for kindergarten. Lindsey is talking about getting Layla started in pre-school maybe this year. I just don't know if I'm ready for all of this. Adelei is six months old and is pretty as a picture...she smiles all the time. To top it all off we have one more on the way, a little boy due to make his appearance in October!
Bradyn loves to spend the night with me because I let him stay up late and watch River Monsters. We go to bed and I read Old Yeller and Savage Sam and then we read the Bible. He asks some pretty amazing questions. He still remembers the songs I used to sing to him when he was two years old. Layla likes to get a blanket and sit on the couch and watch Caillou and Barney. She loves chocolate and will eat it until you make her stop. I love to hear her stay "may I have some choc pop?" Baby Adelei likes when I whisper in her ear, she presses her little ear tightly against my lips as if she can't get close enough. Karen and I love our babies so much and we both say that time stands still when we are with them... if only for a moment. |

C ongratulations to the the Lady Knights softball team from North Davidson for winning the state championship 4A softball tournament held in Raleigh, NC this past weekend! It's not an easy task, winning a state championship; it takes years and years of preparation. Many of the girls have played together since they were seven years old ... dreaming of a day when they would finally wear a ND Black Knight uniform. Coaches have spent hours upon hours sitting at softball clinics learning from the best how to give these kids the tools needed to compete on such a high level. Volunteers from the community have given their precious time and resources to insure the program has all that is necessary... coming from their jobs and meeting at the ball field to put up a new backstop or erect a viewing platform in center field. Others, that are not quite as handy at building, bring cookies or pastries to sweeten everyone up... folks working together with one common interest... "the kids". You really can't say enough about a community that works together like this. Step back and give yourselves a big hand!
With all that's going on around girls softball, there has to be some leadership somewhere. Someone to rally the troops, someone who sees the big picture, that never ever gives up, that takes the lumps and keeps on fightin'. That someone is my bru-in-law, Coach Lambros. I can't write this article without saying how proud I am of him, and, although I know he doesn't like the spotlight on him, he's just going to have to suck it up a minute. I know what the girls mean to him and I know how much it hurts when he sees them do less than their best. He makes being a leader look so easy that you almost wonder if he really knows the depth of the impact he has on those around him.
What makes a good leader? Take a shepherd for example. He lives with his sheep day and night sleeping with the herd through the heat and the rain. He never leaves them no matter what happens. He smells like his sheep and that's why they follow. It's not because they are afraid of his staff, it's because they are secure in his presence and that he doesn't live above them but with them.
A lot of folks look at bru-in-law and see him as someone who teaches young people to hit and catch a ball, but those of us who know him best know that it goes much deeper than that. Beyond all the teaching and coaching he sees a young person's full of potential. He feels responsible to prepare her for a game of softball because that's his job but, in his heart it's his mission to prepare her for the game of life.
"Life will always throw you curves, just keep fouling them off...
the right pitch will come, when it does be prepared to run the bases."

T here's something very powerful and spiritual about the ocean. It's obviously a force that can't be contained by man. It's strong and unpredictable but yet it seems to want to draw you closer and closer to provide you with some sort of comfort. Maybe it's the sound of the waves crashing against the shore that somehow reminds us of the time we spent in the womb. Or maybe it's the constant ebb and tide that says to us that life gives and takes and is no respecter of persons.
Karen and I have been experiencing a few changes, the biggest being that she was offered a great job opportunity outside of Autumn Song.
Those of you who know Karen know this about her ... she's a hard worker with the sweetest personality of anyone you'll ever meet. She understands the value of customer relations and she is one of the best organizers in the world. Any company would be lucky to have her. I miss her around here like you wouldn't believe and she misses the everyday involvement with Autumn Song and with our children. Leaving these things and going back to the workplace was a difficult decision but we both are certain that God had His hand in it and it's the right thing to do.
Because Karen and I are so involved with our work and children we've somehow neglected time alone with each other sooooo ... we decided it was time for a mini vacation, just the two of us. Isn't it odd that you can really miss each other even though your together everyday? Karen and I are so different in many ways and yet we are very much alike in others. When we work I see the differences, but when we're away I only see the young lady I fell in love with many years ago.
Other happenings ... our son Nick graduated from college last week. I'm so proud of him. He's planning on teaching history and coaching. I believe he'll do well. We had big family party at my sister's house celebrating Nick's graduation, Bobby's birthday and Mother's Day. Hot dogs, hamburgers, with lettuce and tomatoes. Ice cold Pepsi's and french fried potatoes. Tell me, does it get any better? |

S he hardly ever cries ... maybe if she's hungry or wet ... in fact, all you have to do is look at her and she smiles all over herself. If you laugh, she laughs; she is one of the happiest babies I've ever seen. She's only four months old and already makes my heart skip. It's a wonderful thing to be loved, but to give love unconditionally is the best of all! |
